Porsche Headlight Restoration
At detailR, we specialise in Porsche Detailing, and as you'll know, Porsche headlights go flaky and cloudy over time.
When the headlights are made, there is a UV layer on the lenses which breaks down over time and causes them to look dull and eventually effect the beam pattern. Sometimes enough to fail an MOT.
There a couple of things you can do.
Replace the light units. Typically, a 997 Xenon unit sells for around £1500 each, second hand.
We can restore the lenses and protect them to stop this happening again for a long, long time!
I'll show you a few of the steps we take to not only restore the clarity, but also to properly protect the lights for a log lasting result.
Here's a typical 997 light we see.
The UV layer has failed making them look yellow and cloudy, and reducing the light output significantly.
The first step is to carefully mask the surrounding paintwork, then go through a range of sanding stages to fully remove the failed layer.
Then, the headlight is machine polished to restore the clarity to the lens.
Once the lens is nice and clear again, there's a few option to finish it.
You can apply a lacquer - this chips and looks dreadful.
Ceramic Coating - this is often short lived on headlights
The protection of choice for us - PPF! This ensures the light units stay crystal clear for years and years. It also helps prevent the lights cracking from flying rocks and things too!
Once the film has settled, it is carefully trimmed leaving you with a beautifully clear, and importantly, protected light unit!
